Hindmarsh nets lone women's soccer goal in win over Cougars

CALGARY - The Huskies only needed one goal to get by Mount Royal at Cougars Stadium Field on Sunday. A beautiful strike from the Huskies' Erica Hindmarsh, combined with excellent defence, secured the 1-0 win for the University of Saskatchewan.

The Huskies had the best chance early on to get on the scoreboard. A free kick just outside of the Cougars box in the 11th minute was crossed into Huskies' Leesa Eggum. Eggum headed the ball just inches away from the open net and the game remained scoreless.

Huskies fifth year Erica Hindmarsh managed to open the scoring in the 23rd minute. With the ball well outside of the box, Hindmarsh delivered a perfect strike to the right side of the net, cleanly beating Cougars goalkeeper Caitlyn Leeson to take the 1-0 lead.

Mount Royal's best chance of the first half came in the 41st minute. Cougars' Hailey Lafave smashed one from the outside left of the box. Huskies goalkeeper Kyleigh Vause used her entire six-foot-one frame to tip the ball just over the crossbar, keeping the match at 1-0 Huskies into the second half.

The Huskies refused to let the Cougars generate anything offensively in the second half, with Mount Royal only managing one shot in the entire half.

With the loss, the Cougars fail to hit .500 on the year and sit with a record of 2-4-0. The Huskies were able to accomplish the feat and now sit with a 3-3-0 record on the year.

Mount Royal will take a trip to Winnipeg for a weekend set against the Manitoba Bisons and the Winnipeg Wesmen, beginning on Saturday Oct. 1 at 4pm.

The Huskies will head home then come right back to Calgary for a date with the Calgary Dinos of Saturday Oct. 1. On Sunday, they will continue on south for a date with Lethbridge, both matches are slated for 12pm.
