Women's Hockey Shut Out In Edmonton

EDMONTON – The University of Alberta Pandas hockey team picked up their sixth consecutive win, defeating the Saskatchewan Huskies 1-0, Friday night at Clare Drake Arena.

Lindsay Weech scored the only goal of the game in the first period, while Lindsey Post stopped all 11 shots she faced to earn her third shutout of the season.

In what would easily be considered a defence-first game, neither team generated many scoring opportunities throughout 60 minutes of play at Clare Drake Arena. Both team's had their fair share of chances on the powerplay, but both units combined to go 0/11 with the player advantage.

Weech scored the lone tally 12 minutes into the first period, floating a point shot from the left side past Cassidy Hendricks' glove. The goal was the first for Weech on the season, and the first of her Canada West career. Alberta was unable to add to the lead in the first, outshooting the visitors 12-3.

The second period was a carbon copy of the first, with a vast majority of the game being played in the neutral zone. Autumn MacDougall, fresh off a three-point performance last Saturday, had a pair of looks in the frame, but sailed both a breakaway and odd-player rush shots over the net.

The stingy Alberta defence saved their best for last, as they held a desperate Huskie team to just two third period shots, and 11 throughout the game, en route to the 1-0 win.

The two teams will be back in action tomorrow night, as the Pandas look for their seventh straight win at 6:00 p.m., once again at Clare Drake Arena.
