SASKATOON – The Mount Royal University Cougars blanked the No. 9 ranked University of Saskatchewan of Huskies 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 28-26) Saturday night at the PAC.
With the win the Cougars improve to 8-8 on the season, while Saskatchewan drops to 9-9 with the loss.
After Mount Royal took the first two sets, the third set matched the definition of a barnburner. Each team had a two point advantage, but nearly the entire set was made up of ties or one team nudging ahead of the other. A kill by Tyler Schmidt and a block by a pair of Cougars eventual ended the thrilling third set, 28-26 in Mount Royal's favour.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the second set and did not allow the Huskies to lead for a point in the frame. The Huskies battled back midway through the set to close the gap to just two points, but the Cougars were able to hold off the home squad's attack and take it 25-23.
The Huskies looked comfortable in the first set, taking a modest lead early. With the teams squared up at 11 the Cougars seemed to find their stride on a 4-0 run and cruised to the finish with a 25-20 win.
Mount Royal had an advantage in the hitting game on Saturday with a hitting percentage of .433 compared to the Huskies at just .260.
Tyler Schmidt had a team-high 18 kills for the Cougars. Jordan Parkin and Josh Kirkham each registered double digit kill figures with 11 and 10 respectively. Schmidt also recorded five assisted blocks.
The Huskies play host to the MacEwan Griffins next weekend at the PAC, while Mount Royal will play a home-and-home series with crosstown rival the Calgary Dinos.
