SASKATOON – University of Saskatchewan forward Josh Roach tallied four points to lift the No. 3 ranked Huskies 5-2 over the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday night at Rutherford Rink.
With the weekend sweep, the Huskies remain perfect on the season at 4-0. The Pronghorns drop to 1-1-2. A night earlier, Saskatchewan won 4-3 in double overtime.
After a scoreless first, the 'Horns would open up the scoring in the second. Twelve minutes into the period, Lethbridge captain Mitchell Maxwell received a pass from Torrin White in the high slot and shot the puck past Huskie goalie Jordon Cooke.
Minutes later, Saskatchewan evened the tally. Roach dumped the puck in deep and won the battle in the corner, feeding Kendall McFaull who fanned his shot, which threw off Pronghorn Goalie Garret Hughson as the puck slowly snuck inside the far post at 15:32.
Before the second period came to a close, the Huskies would jump out in front. On the power play, Carson Stadnyk's shot from the point was tipped in by Roach at 18:11.
The teams combined for four goals in the final 20 minutes.
After a Lethbridge turnover, fifth-year Lawrence found his second goal of the year at 2:32. The 'Horns would cut their lead to one once again halfway through the period. On the power play, Maxwell would feed defenseman Evan Wardley who was smashed the one-timer by Cooke at 10:03.
Roach added his second at 13:39, while Shirley added final Huskies' goal on the power play at 15:24.
Cooke finished the game making 26 saves, while Hughson made 27 at the other end of the ice.
Saskatchewan travels to Winnipeg to meet Manitoba Bisons next weekend, while Lethbridge meets the Mount Royal Cougars in a home-and-home series.
