SASKATOON – Shawn Lathan's three pointer with 23 seconds to go in overtime set the University of Saskatchewan Huskies up for a 90-89 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday night at the PAC.
Saskatchewan hadn't led in the five minute overtime until Lathan's shot as the teams traded scores for most of the period.
Saskatchewan held a 79-71 lead late in the fourth quarter after trailing for most of the game. Lethbridge hit a pair of clutch free throw's down the stretch to force the extra session. The Huskies took their first lead of the game at 73-71 with just over three minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Saskatchewan improves to 4-8 with the win and ends a mini three game losing streak in the process. Lethbridge falls to 6-4 with the loss.
Lathan scored 18 points in the win for the Huskies and added six rebounds and three steals. Shane Osayande matched his teammates 18 points to go along with eight boards and a pair of blocks. Osayande finished the night 10-of-11 from the free throw line.
Rob Olsen led the Pronghorns offense with 22 points. Brandon Brine and Dejon Burdeaux came off the bench to record 17 and 19 points respectively. Brine was the leading rebounder for the 'Horns with nine.
The scoring trend from Friday night's matchup was almost reversed on Saturday. Lethbridge took a commanding lead to start the game as the Huskies struggled to knock down jump shots. The Pronghorns would close the first quarter up 17-6.
In the second, Saskatchewan began to chip away at the lead, cutting it to nine at half time.
The Huskies began to gain momentum in the latter part of the third quarter before taking the lead late in the fourth, much to the delight of the crowd at the PAC.
Saskatchewan heads to Winnipeg next weekend for a series with the Wesmen. Lethbridge returns home to host the Manitoba Bisons.
