1998 Football Team

Football’s roots at the University of Saskatchewan came from rugby. In 1912, a team was formed and continued to compete until 1950. During the almost four decades, the Huskies won six Hardy Cup championships in six appearances.

From 1912-1950, then 1959-63 the Huskies played in the Western Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union but in 1964, football rules were introduced. The Huskies played in the Western Intercollegiate Football League, which eventually became the Canada West Universities Athletic Association.

In the team’s history, they have won 18 Hardy Cup championships in 22 appearances, won nine CIS semifinal bowl games and three Vanier Cup titles – 1990, 1996 and 1998.

For the last 28 seasons, the team has been led by Brian Towriss. Towriss has an impressive conference 143-80-1 record and 29-17 playoff record. He holds the record for the most wins in CIS history with 173. The Moose Jaw native has led Saskatchewan to three Vanier Cup titles, 11 Hardy Cup titles and nine Vanier Cup appearances. He is a eight-time Canada West coach of the year and one time CIS coach of the year. Towriss joined an elite group in 2007 when he was handed Saskatchewan’s highest honour by the Government of Saskatchewan, the Order of Merit.

The Huskies play in Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park. The original Griffiths Stadium opened in 1936. In 1967, a new stadium was built a few hundred metres east of the original site. In 2005, major upgrades were made to the stadium including artificial turf and field lighting.

Since 1985, 50 Huskies have been drafted into the CFL with nine playing currently in the professional football league. Most notable Huskies to don CFL jerseys include Kelly Bates, Dylan Barker, Dan Farthing, Scott Flory, John Konihowski, Gene Makowsky, Marshall Toner and Paul Woldu.

In 2008, the 1996 Vanier Cup champions were inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.
